Artist Highlight: Nicolas V Sanchez

Mueller + Jacobs is delighted to feature the work of Nicolas V Sanchez in our Artist Highlight.

Since being awarded the Art Postgraduate Fellowship at NYAA in 2012, Nicolas V Sanchez has catapulted into acclaim through his talents in painting and drawing. Sanchez has been featured in VOGUE Italia, Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, Drawing Magazine, and Fine Art Connoisseur. Since 2012, Sanchez has had solo and group exhibitions in New York, China, and Italy including being featured in the 2015 Venice Biennale. Check out his Instagram (which has over 25,000 followers) to catch a glimpse of his recent works.

M+J sat down with the artist for a quick chat about his work, and whats in store for 2016.

MJ: Talk to us about about your influences – what inspires your work?

NS: Inspiration comes from different sources and in different forms. My work can be inspired by anywhere from family history and personal identity to methods of art making and various mediums. I am also inspired by how my work leads me into gaining new experiences and meeting new people.

MJ: Where does your aesthetic come from? Are there any artists, throughout history, that you believe really inspire your work?

NS: John Singer Sargent is an artist that has served as an ongoing source of inspiration. The materials I use; oil paint, charcoal, and ink often guide the work.

MJ: You work with a number of different styles – charcoal, paint, ink. Do you feel any of them are more challenging than another? And if so, why?

NS: They all present different yet equal challenges, however, the challenges are mostly found in myself and the way I work with each material. Sometimes I can be too hesitant or passive in a ballpoint pen drawing or too assertive in a painting….balance.

MJ: What advice would you give aspiring artists, that you wish you had been given before starting your career?

NS: Do what feels the best and cut all the rest out of the equation.

MJ: Since you were awarded the NYAA Postgraduate Fellowship in 2014, your career has skyrocketed! Numerous residencies, features, the Venice Biennale and of course your recent commission for Douglas Elliman at Stella Tower! Can you give us any preview of whats in store for 2016?

NS: This year, I will continue to create work for great friends and supporters, but there is an artist residency in Mexico I am working on. I have not set a date, but it will include a workshop and a solo exhibition featuring all new paintings and drawings.

MJ: Exciting times ahead. We can’t wait to see where this year takes you, Nico. Congratulations again on your continued success.

Artist Highlight: Nicolas Holiber

Mueller + Jacobs is delighted to feature the work of Nicolas Holiber in our Artist Highlight.

Holiber is a Brooklyn based artist who is well known for his paintings, sculptures and public art. After finishing his MFA at NYAA in 2012, Holiber received a prestigious postgraduate fellowship and from there has gone on to complete several residencies. Recently, his public sculptures have come into the spotlight. Last year, he was commissioned by the NYC Parks Department to create Head of Goliath as part of the Art in the Parks program. Holiber has also found acclaim creating public sculptures for the LoMan Arts Festival, and New York Health & Racquet Club. M+J recently caught up with the busy artist to ask him a few quick questions about his practice.

M+J: Talk to us about about your influences – what inspires you to make this kind of art.

NH: I get a lot of inspiration from the material I use. I love how something can be made for one single purpose but then an artist can come along and use it for something completely different. It gives new life to the material.

M+J: Where does your aesthetic come from? Are there any artists, throughout history, that you believe really inspire your work?

NH: I have always been a fan of Art Brut, German Expressionism, non-Western Art, etc. But also classical sculpture and painting… So in my work I try to balance these different aesthetics. The more I research artists, living and dead, the more I am inspired!

M+J: Your works are very tactile by nature. Can you describe your creative process?

NH: My creative process is a very labor intensive, hands on procedure. When I’m working with wood I’m constantly fitting things together, cutting pieces, moving parts around. It’s like a giant puzzle except I don’t entirely know what the final image will be and I have to make my own pieces.

M+J: What is the biggest challenge of working with reclaimed materials?

NH: Having the work be about more than just the materials.

M+J: How do you think your style has developed over the years? Can you identify any particular moment that really changed the course of your work?

NH: I think it has been a steady progression from what I was painting in grad school to the sculptures I’m making now. When I graduated from NYAA, I was awarded a Postgraduate Fellowship and decided to focus solely on sculpture. I had majored in painting and never took a sculpture class so the medium was new and exciting for me, and still is. I think switching mediums like that opened up a lot of new doors for me in terms of what I thought was possible with painting and sculpture.

M+J: Congratulations on your recent feature in Brooklyn Magazine’s 30 Under 30. What’s in store for you for 2016?

NH: Thanks!! In March I’ll be having my first solo show with Gitler & _______ in Harlem. Next month I’m also starting a residency on Governor’s Island sponsored by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.

Laura Roughneen is an Art Researcher, Historian and Market Analyst from Ireland.

Laura holds a Bachelor’s degree of Fine Art and a Master’s degree in art research from the Limerick School of Art and Design, Ireland. Most recently, she was awarded the prestigious Graduate Research Office Scholarship to conduct 3 years postgraduate research investigating key dynamics influencing the international contemporary art market. Before moving to New York and joining Mueller + Jacobs, Laura served as a Business Development Executive and Arts Officer in Ireland.
